Third delegation for the release of Greek national returns empty handed
By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL: The third attempt of the Muslim community of Bumburate valley to release the Greek national Athunasius from his captors in Afghanistan ended in failure as the Afghan Taliban are said to be adamant in their demand to release three of their commanders from Pakistani jails. Musa Khan, one of the two members of the delegation, told chitraltimes.com here on Friday that the Taliban leaders of Nooristan are not ready to soften their demand. He said that the delegation was led by former union nazim Abdul Majid Qureshi and had left for Nooristan from Chitral four days ago via Arandu border and had wide-ranging talks with Taliban leaders and repeatedly requested them to release the Greek national from their captivity without any condition. He said that on their insistence, the Taliban have dropped their demand of ransom which they had set at 2 million US dollars. The Taliban leaders have demanded the release of a former Defense Minister of Mulla Umer period Ubidullah Akhund, Mulla Yasir and Qari Rehmatuddin. Regarding the health condition of the kidnapped Greek, Mr. Khan said that the delegation was not allowed to meet him but they were assured that he was sound and in good health. The Taliban leaders told them that the captive was being treated kindly and as guest. The Greek national had been lifted from Bumburate valley in September 8 last from his residence at Kalash Dur which is a multi-purpose building erected by him for the welfare of Kalash people. He had launched a number of projects in different sectors of development in Bumburate valley with the help of Greek NGO named Greek Volunteers.
